Many adults find it difficult to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the facial skin. As we age, our skin becomes less elastic and retains less moisture. If the supporting tissues beneath the skin are not producing enough collagen, the fibers become weakened. The result is folding or creasing of the skin.
BOTOX® is an effective treatment that prevents these skin wrinkles from forming. When we smile or frown, wrinkles appear because the muscles of the face pull or relax, and any loose skin relaxes as well.
BOTOX® can significantly decrease the amount of skin relaxation because it dampens the nerves’ ability to send signals to the facial muscles. We recommend this type of treatment for those who suffer from prominent wrinkle lines near the eyes, around the perimeter of the lips, and along the surface of the cheeks.
Why BOTOX® is Effective
When a patient receives BOTOX® injections, the chemicals in the solution temporarily paralyzes the nerves, blocking their ability to send important signals to the facial muscles.
Although this treatment is not a permanent solution to the problem of fine lines and wrinkles, its effect is long-lasting. The facial muscles remain in a relaxed posture, and the result is smoother skin without the appearance of crow’s feet, frown lines, and lip lines.
What the Patient Should Know
BOTOX® injections are performed by a professional dermatologist or skin surgeon. No anesthesia is required, and the entire treatment session can take less than 30 minutes.
Before the treatment is scheduled, we sit down with the client and outline a customized program determined by the location and severity of the facial wrinkles.
The BOTOX® solution is injected using a very fine, thin needle. The client feels little or no discomfort as the needle penetrates below the skin. The nerve-paralyzing effect takes about three days, but most of our clients notice an almost immediate improvement in the smoothness of the facial skin.
Most of our clients report satisfactory results for up to six months after receiving BOTOX® injections. After repeated sessions, scheduled about five or six months apart, the muscles actually becomes trained to relax, meaning that each session results in more satisfactory smoothing of the skin.
BOTOX® is not a permanent treatment, but it does allow the nerves and muscles to adjust over time, meaning that the natural muscle contractions become less pronounced over a period of one or two years.
